Information
Key Components of “Our World From Space”
- Satellite Imagery and Remote Sensing Education:
- The project introduces students, educators, and communities to the fundamentals of satellite imaging and data interpretation, helping them explore how satellites provide insights into environmental changes.
- Environmental Monitoring and Climate Impact Analysis:
- By analysing satellite data, participants can observe changes in ocean temperatures, sea levels, and coastal erosion over time. This approach offers a unique perspective on climate change’s effects on marine and coastal ecosystems, especially relevant to Scotland’s waters.
- Ocean Literacy and Community Engagement:
- Through 9 days of workshops and interactive learning sessions, SAMS will engage local schools and communities, enhancing awareness of how space technology can monitor environmental health. These workshops are running with sessions for schools, the public and home educators, to increase the accessibility of this research, and improve inclusivity of marine science.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration:
- The project draws on expertise from various scientific fields, including marine biology, environmental science, oceanography and geospatial analysis, providing a comprehensive view of how space technology intersects with environmental science.
- Showcasing Current, Cutting-edge Research:
- At the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), there is current innovative research using space technology in marine research- including tracking algal growth on the continent of Antarctica and its link to penguin populations, sea ice melt patterns and its impact on human and animal resident populations, and ocean current modelling for temperatures shift mapping.
Event was delivered in Oct-Nov 2024, reaching 631 participants, with a total of 1110 Engagement hours. Breakdown of participant info available.
