Key Features of the Girls Do Physics Event at SAMS

    1. Ocean Physics Demonstrations
    • Exploring how physics principles like buoyancy, waves, and currents shape the ocean, and how the physics of climate change impacts the marine environment.
    1. Hands-on Experiments and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) Showcases
    • Engaging activities such as measuring salinity, density, and temperature effects on water movement. Demonstrating underwater robotics and their role in marine research.
    1. Acoustics & Sonar in Oceanography
    • Showcasing how sound waves are used to map the ocean floor and track marine life. Within the complex network of Marine Protected Areas, and ever increasing levels of anthropogenic underwater noise, ecoacoustics provide a non-intrusive method for gathering information about cetaceans and other species in our local area.
    1. Remote Sensing & Satellite Data
    • Understanding how physics is used in ocean monitoring through satellite technology. This also demonstrates how SAMS researchers use satellite data to monitor patterns of ice melt for navigation, and algae distribution in polar regions.
    1. Careers in Marine Science, Networking & Q&A Sessions
    • Insights from women in physics-based marine research roles, highlighting career paths and opportunities. Providing a platform for students to connect with scientists and ask about their experiences in the field.

This will involve 120 pupils, from 8 local schools.
