Key Features of “For the Love of Whales”

    1. Sizing up Species
      • Pupils will experience the magnitude of some marine giants. Hope the Humpback inflatable Whale will enable students to get close up and personal to learn more about the anatomy and threats of these species.
    2. Watching for Whales
      • With the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust, pupils will learn how to conduct a shore watch, to contribute to the extensive citizen science effort on cetaceans around Scotland. With species identification, behaviour recognition, and an introduction to the WhaleTrack app, pupils can engage with how cetacean data is gathered in the field.
    3. Whaletalk
      • Research from SAMS will be shared with pupils around the importance of sound for marine mammals. With a hydrophone network developing in local waters, researchers can listen and learn to these species without causing any distress or disturbance.
    4. Saving the Stranded
    • Volunteers from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue will be attendance, to introduce pupils to the role of Marine Mammal Medics, who are trained to refloat stranded animals, and free entangled species.

    Goals of the Workshop Series

In such marine-reliant communities, this event aims to demonstrate the multi-faceted approach to cetacean research and conservation on the West Coast of Scotland. It will also highlight the importance of the public in collecting data contributing to research and policy. It is vital to showcase aspects of local marine research to the young people in our isolated communities.
