InterSci’s ChatSci series provides a chance for people to chat about science, with the aim of encouraging collaboration and conversation. The conversations are accessible to all and are directed at non-specialists. If you’re interested in science or learning about topics outside of your area of expertise, grab your drink, come along for a chat and bring your friends.
Our Speaker:
Dr Annie Visser Quinn, a recent PhD graduate, is a Research Associate on the Water Resilient Cities project at Heriot-Watt University. Annie is a civil engineer turned data scientist, but mainly describes herself as a problem solver. She streamlines and breaks issues down into bitesize pieces to answer complex questions on topics from climate change to COVID-19.
Her research showcases the power of just a little bit of code and helps answer critical questions. How might drought events evolve differently in the future? There might be an area where droughts always end in heavy rainfall right now. However, what if this changes in the future? How can we find out, and what would this mean? The Markov chain determines the probability of going from one state to another – from that severe drought to heavy rainfall. By applying this on data gathered today, as well as the simulations of the future, we can confidently answer these questions
